Yulia Smolyansky is a mostly self-taught fused glass artisan and photographer. After graduating from Sikorsky Technical Institute in Kiev, Ukraine she first made her mark in NewYork, making mosaics and mosaic furniture for the Ercole Gallery in the mid-nineties. Then she headed west, making similar furniture and art for the R. Wagner Co in PortlandOregon. Meanwhile she continued her love of photography from her college days, and had a exhibit and won several local photo contests. Her artistic eye was sharpened. Then she became fascinated with fused glass, and how to incorporate it into elegant jewelry. She embarked on a 3-year journey, starting with a miniature kiln, to fuse glass into the colors and shapes best suited to her trained eye. Now she uses a computer controlled kiln to fuse her glass gems. But that is just the start. She then weaves each piece with beads and accents to create one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and matching rings and earrings. All made by hand, here in the Pacific Northwest.
